We’ve added additional themes to our ever-growing list of templates for your WordPress MU web site. Click the name of the theme below to see a preview:

Like all WordPress themes, these were developed by third parties outside of Baylor University. If you encounter any technical problems when using any of these new themes, please contact Lance_Grigsby@baylor.edu.

Post Password, “Open link in new Window” features fixed

November 19th, 2007 by lance_grigsby

Some of you may have noticed that the “Post Password” feature for pages/posts was not working. In addition, you may have also noticed that when you selected “Open link in new window”when you attempted to create a link, the link would not open in a new window. Both of these features are now fixed …

Use HotBar? If so, please uninstall it …

September 27th, 2007 by lance_grigsby

It appears that HotBar, a graphical “skin” for Internet Explorer, causes the text editor in WordPress (officially, the TinyMCE editor) to behave erratically. If you’re not sure if you have HotBar or not, take a look at your browser’s toolbar–if it looks something like this, you’ve got HotBar.

The main problem occurs when a user with HotBar attempts to write or edit a post/page: Simply clicking in this content area will produce extraneous HTML table code. The coding may be removed manually using code view, but the real solution is to uninstall HotBar (which is considered to be Adware). A typical uninstallation of this program will resolve the issue, but please see this Web site for more thorough removal instructions from Symantec.

New video plugins added

August 17th, 2007 by lance_grigsby

New video plugins will now allow you to post Flash, YouTube, and Google movies in your WordPress MU posts. The KIMILI FLASH EMBED and WORDPRESS VIDEO plugins must be enabled in your dashboard in order for you to use them. To do this, click the “Plugins” link at the top and activate the desired plugins.

  • To use the Kimili plugin, simply cut and past the code provided on the plugin page and supply the path to your .swf file. You have to upload your file first and send it to the editor to retrieve the link.
  • To use the WordPress Video plugin, use the following code in your post: [service ID]. For example, [youtube 988c98c7] or [google 3203596276754701357]. The video ids can be found after the last “=” sign in the URLs of the video you want (and with YouTube videos, be sure to include the underscore prior to the ID).

Rich HTML editor not available in Safari for Mac

August 10th, 2007 by lance_grigsby

Attention Mac users: Unfortunately, the rich HTML editor in WordPress is not available on the Macintosh version of Safari. This apparently is due to a bug in Safari, not WordPress. Please use Firefox, Opera, or Netscape to use this feature. For more information, see this article.

WordPress MU Theme Usage FAQs

August 2nd, 2007 by lance_grigsby

Q: What is a theme?

A: A WordPress theme is a unique template you can use to change the look of your site. Most themes contain the essential WordPress features that make WordPress, well, WordPress, so you can expect them to share many common features.

Most of the themes available on the “Presentation” page were developed by individuals unaffiliated with Baylor and have varying levels of stylistic quality and functionality. While most of these themes work well enough, we cannot guarantee that every theme will function exactly as you would like (In other words, just because we offer it doesn’t mean it’s a great theme!).

Take time to experiment with various themes until you find one that suits your taste and offers the features or “widgets” you want. That said, the Electronic Library staff generally will not have time to repair (or add functionality to) a theme developed by someone outside of Baylor.

Q: May new themes be added?

A: The Baylor Electronic Library is willing to add new themes that faculty and staff find on their own. Keep in mind, however, that we reserve the right to refuse adding themes that fail to comply with Baylor’s Technology Systems Usage Policy, or those that simply don’t work well with Baylor’s system. A good place to start looking for new themes is the WordPress “ThemeViewer” at http://themes.wordpress.net/.

Also, most of the themes on this page were not designed for Baylor’s version of WordPress, WordPress MU (or “Multi User”). The WordPress folks claim most themes developed for the ordinary version of WordPress will work with MU, but we cannot guarantee it.

Finally, any theme we install will be available by default to every other user in the system.

Q: Will you develop a theme for me?

A: At this time, we cannot develop custom themes. However, with the many themes we offer and the widespread availability of themes elsewhere, we hope that you will find the template you’re looking for.

Q: If I develop my own theme, will you install it for me?

A: So, you’ve developed your own theme, and you want to run it on our server … See the above point, “May new themes be added?” If you’ve developed a theme that is well tested and adheres to our guidelines, then we will consider making your theme available to our system users.

Q: I’ve found a nifty WordPress plugin I really like. Will you install it?

A: Most likely, as long as the plugin doesn’t interfere with the general function of our WordPress server AND it offers some general benefit to every other user in the system. Again, such requests will be considered as time and resources allow.

Forty-two new themes added!!!

August 2nd, 2007 by lance_grigsby

Yep, that’s right. WordPress users at Baylor may now select from a total of 46 templates, ranging in styles from very plain to the very graphically rich. To change your template, select the “Presentation” link in the Dashboard and simply click the theme you want. Have fun!
