Why you can’t be a softy…0
…and stay in business.
The Sports Center offers full day or half day morning or evening summer camps during the summer. It’s a fabulous deal. The kiddos get their choice of a sport specialty, a healthy snack in the morning, a delicious lunch, and a healthy snack in the afternoon…and did I mention that they swim at a different community pool every day? Sounds like an 8 year old version of heaven if you ask me! The first thing I am astounded by is how these kids eat! The Sports Center places much emphasis on nutrition through a system of Go(healthy foods that you can eat all the time, fresh fruits and veggies, etc.), Slow(Foods that you eat in moderation, red meat, pork, excessive starches), and Whoa!(Birthday cake, cookies, refined sugars, to be eaten every once in a while as treats). Once the kids go through the line for lunch or snack, they are allowed to go by for seconds, and it is interesting to note that these kiddos aren’t asking for more enchiladas, or meatball subs(on whole grain bread of course!), they want more vegetables, and salad. It’s great!
It’s comical that the same issue that plagued and annoyed me last week in regards to parents and their lack of planning is what is bugging me this week in a different manner. It really does tug at my heartstrings when a parent desperately wants their child to be registered for the session of camp that has a waiting list 15 families long. There is always some great reason that causes me to want to make special exceptions, Mom can’t get off work, Dad is having surgery this week…or, the kid has just really really been looking forward to it since they attended our Winter Break camp and they will be absolutely crushed! Now the problem with this is two fold 1) There obviously is not room for everyone, 2) There is the slight issue of profit margins.
If I had my way I would be squeezing in those Mom’s who want their kids to attend half day camp while they work part time, but that does not make much sense. A full day camper has a greater profit margin than a full day camper.
Now of course you are thinking…DUH! Common sense…however common sense does not always override the biggest brown eyes you have ever seen in your entire life!
