The final product is taking shape…slowly July 20, 2009
Posted by jeffrey_steely in : Uncategorized , add a commentThere has been some progress over the last couple weeks, but nothing too dramatic in terms of appearance. The new restrooms should be nearly complete by the end of the week — that is, if the tile on the walls ever gets done right, and if Tony C. keeps his bum away from the wet paint. We expected carpet installation to start in the public area today, but alas, the carpet won’t arrive until Friday. So hopefully we’ll see major progress on the floor in about a week. Also, we are expecting a crane to deliver pavers and base for the the new entry to the Harvey Garden on Thursday. I wonder if a stork would have been less expensive?
Stay tuned for more… hopefully to include something interesting enough to merit some pictures!
One door closes, another opens, and still others are installed July 1, 2009
Posted by jeffrey_steely in : Uncategorized , add a commentThere has been a great deal of progress in the last couple weeks. Staff in Resources and Collection Management Services are mourning the loss of a door.
Meanwhile, workers cut the opening where new doors will go leading into the lab supervisor’s office.

Continuing on the door theme, interior and exterior doors have replaced plywood for the new entrance to the Harvey Garden.

The first coat of paint is on most of the walls (even in the hallway – sorry for that little inconvenience this morning), and tile is going up (on the walls) and down (on the floor) in the new restrooms.

What’s next?
- Lots of noise – when the electricians core through the floor to install new electrical outlets,
- Paint and carpet in McVey Lounge – which will be the new office for library development,
- Sinks – with a solid surface counter and faucets that don’t make you touch the back of the sink when washing hands – hooray!
- Toilets – which we hope our resident restroom critic will review favorably on Twitter!
- A crane – to lower pavers and the base material for the new walkway in the Harvey Garden. We plan to give notice at least one day before this exciting event.
Restrooms “out of order” – that’s good to know! June 18, 2009

Someone with a sense of humor (or serious paranoia) put up an “out of order” sign in one of the new restrooms. Seeing as how their are no fixtures (not to mention stall doors), the sign was perhaps unnecessary.
The walls for the new restrooms are insulated, the sheetrock is up, and we should see paint soon (and eventually, toilets, stalls, and a ceiling).
On the other end of the floor, a nice, clean, and not-easily-achieved line in the tile marks where the new carpet will begin.

What’s happening this week June 11, 2009
Posted by jeffrey_steely in : Uncategorized , add a commentOn the East end: Yesterday the new restrooms passed their plumbing inspection. Today workers are making some adjustments to the framing. We expect the framing inspection soon, and should see drywall going up any day now.
On the West end: The carpet is gone, and the flooring subcontractor will soon bring in some equipment (something more effective than hammer and chisel!) to remove an area of tile at the edge of the work space. All of the columns have new framing around them. Soon we should see workers roughing in the new electrical outlets and data lines. Work has also started on refreshing the McVey Lounge as the office for the Libraries’ new development officer.
We had a request for a view of what the finished product will look like. Well, we don’t have a lot to offer, but here is a floor plan for the west end. Note that we made some adjustments to the plan after it was drawn, but this will at least give you some idea of what we are up to. Hopefully by next week we can share some images of the furniture we are planning to put in.

No water or restrooms Friday morning (6/5) June 4, 2009

The plumbing is “roughed in” for the new restrooms on the Garden Level. The time has come to connect the new water and sewer pipes to the exiting lines. Unfortunately, this means that we will need to completely turn off the water and close all restrooms in Moody and Jones. This work is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, June 5. The plumbers will arrive bright and early to get started. However, it takes several hours to drain the lines, which has to happen before they can make the connections. So we expect to be without water or restrooms throughout the morning. Staff or clients may use the restrooms in McCrary, Castellaw, or Sid Rich during the outage. Or, since Java City will be closed for the day, perhaps you’ll want to visit a restroom in the Dutton Garage on your way to pick up some Starbucks.
We expect the restrooms and sinks to be back in service by noon.
Network outages June 1, 2009
Posted by jeffrey_steely in : Uncategorized , add a commentDue to network upgrades, we will have some network outages in the Central Libraries (beyond the 6/2 campus-wide outage) on the evenings of 6/2 (tomorrow) and 6/11 (next Thursday). We will post this information for our clients on doors, at computer workstations, and on the library website. You need to know that our ability to offer service will be affected by these outages. Circulation desks should expect to use manual checkout procedures as necessary. The outages will take place between 5:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. the following morning. On the evening of Tuesday, 6/2, some areas of Moody Library may be without network access for more than one hour. The Garden Level Computing Facility, Jones Library, and Poage Library will not be affected by these intermittent outages. However, the entire campus will be without network access beginning at 6 p.m. We anticipate this campus-wide outage should end by 8 p.m.
On Thursday, 6/11, we will have periodic network outages in Moody, Jones, and Poage throughout the evening. These outages will last approximately 90 minutes. Telephone service will be disrupted by the work on 6/11 (but not on 6/2).
Please note that, when the network is down, clients and staff will not be able to access Blackboard, AirBear, BearSpace, online library resources, or any other web-based resource. It will also be impossible to log on to a computer or print during these outages. Those who are already logged in before the outage occurs will be able to continue working on local applications.
What’s with all the noise? May 22, 2009
Posted by jeffrey_steely in : Uncategorized , add a commentWell, with renovation going on we knew there would be some noise. We didn’t know, however, that the concrete slabs beneath the windows hid…more concrete. And from the looks of it, some very hard concrete. So the construction crew had to bring in a jackhammer to chisel it out. The good news is that, from the looks of things, they are about done removing the concrete. While the noise has been a bit annoying, I’m just thankful that I’m not the one working with the jackhammer.

Windows uninstalled May 19, 2009
Posted by jeffrey_steely in : Uncategorized , add a commentNo, nothing is happening to your operating system, at least as far as we are aware. But workers removed the glass windows where the new entry to the Harvey Garden will go.
In place of the windows we now have boards to keep the squirrels (of both the 4-legged and 2-legged varieties) out.

Meanwhile, on the inside, the restrooms and airlock continue to take shape.

No hint of the shelves - except for the bare patches of concrete
Today the construction crew put up a dust containment curtain around the restrooms.

Behind the curtain, the new restrooms and the new entrance to Harvey Garden are beginning to take shape. The steel studs toward the back of the photo mark the boundary between the restrooms and the airlock. In the foreground you can see where the restroom walls will go up.

Posted by jeffrey_steely in : Uncategorized , add a commentAsbestos abatement work has been scheduled this weekend on BOTH ends of the Garden Level. Air handlers will be off, and the entire stacks area will be closed. This means that access to most staff areas will be difficult, if not impossible. Electronic Library staff should be able to access their offices by going through the computer lab on Saturday and Sunday. Administrative Office staff should be able to access their suite. The computer lab should be able to operate normally, though it may be a bit warm. All Garden Level reshelving will need to be postponed until Monday morning.
We will post signs on the Garden Level glass doors this evening to let clients know that the stacks are closed.
