The Second Coming…of RG3

As you probably know, RG3 was on campus today to announce that he is the new face for EA Sports NCAA Football video game. For the first time ever, EA Sports brought the photo shoot for the cover to the college the player attended. I got to be a part of this awesome event! Yay!

This semester I am in a photography class and my professor, Curtis Callaway, knew the head photographer for EA Sports. As a result, I was allowed to photograph RG3 during the official photo shoot. It was amazing! It was definitely one of the coolest things I have done since coming to Baylor.

Here are a few of my favorites from today’s shoot. Enjoy!

(There are a lot better pictures but the files were too big so….)

Lots of love!

Robert Griffin III, Superman, and the Heisman Trophy

So, if you haven’t heard, our very own RG3 won the Heisman trophy. Pretty cool stuff.

The night of the presentation, a friend and I went to the SUB to join in the hulabaloo. Man was that place crowded! We ended up sitting on the floor in the Barfield Drawing Room with at least 400 other students and faculty. Every single time that RG3 came on the screen during the presentation broadcast, the entire room burst into applause. It was a pretty awesome site to behold.

Once the actual ceremony began, everything got very quiet. You could tell that everyone was incredibly nervous. Every time they showed RG3 or said something about him, people would start cheering and then immediately turn to their neighbors and “shhh” them. When RG3 modeled his Superman socks in front of the entire sports nation, everyone in Barfield just about died with laughter. Those socks were the perfect choice.

Then, it was time. Every single person in the room pulled out their cell phone and began video taping. “The 2011 winner of the Heisman Trophy is Rob….” And the entire campus erupted into screams of victory!! Everyone that had been sitting on the floor in Barfield was on their feet jumping up and down and hugging random strangers. Quite a few people shed tears of joy. I was, admittedly, one of them.

And then came his wonderful acceptance speech.

“The hotter the heat, the harder the steel. No pressure, no diamonds.
We compete. We win. We are Baylor.
Baylor we are and Baylor we’ll always be,
but it’s up to us to define what that means.”

Experiencing Baylor’s first Heisman winner with the rest of my fellow Baylor students was one of the most exciting moments of my life. What a great year to be a freshman at Baylor!!

Oh My Goodness! She’s Alive!!!!

Hey guys! It’s been a really long time since I’ve blogged about anything. Oops. As you might be able to guess, things got a little hectic and crazy towards the end of last semester. But, it’s a new year and time for new blogs!! Yay!

So, here’s what I’m planning to do: I’m going to write a series of blogs about things that happened last semester that I should have blogged about, but didn’t. For instance, there may or may not be a blog about RG3 winning the Heisman. And there will probably be a blog about the travails of finals.

But, you all should know that I have determined to write my blogs in shorter, more manageable chunks this semester. So, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

Homecoming Part 2

On Friday, the real fun began. You could tell it was Homecoming weekend from the moment you stepped out of your dorm room Friday morning. The campus was buzzing with activity. The highlight of the day, however, came much later, at the lighting of the bonfire. Alumni and current students alike gathered on Fountain Mall for a pep rally and the lighting of the Homecoming bonfire. I was with my father. As we began to sing “That Good Ol’ Baylor Line,” I turned and began pressing my way towards the bonfire. But, my dad grabbed my arm and started walking in the opposite direction, laughing at me as we went. In about three minutes I was immensely grateful for his foresight. It got very hot, very quickly. After the bonfire, and as an 80’s tribute band began to play (my father found this very entertaining), my dad and I made our way towards Waco Hall to attend Pigskin Review. The performances were amazing.

Saturday was filled with even more fun. I woke up bright and early to attend a Tri-Delt reunion breakfast with my mom. I had a blast but I’m pretty sure she had even more fun than I did. Then, we made our way over to the Burleson Quad to watch the parade. I was very impressed by the floats. Throughout this entire process, I was being introduced to my parents’ friends from college. It was fun to get to see my parents reminisce about their Baylor days. After the parade, we went to lunch with my parents’ best friends from both college and seminary. I had a blast as they reverted to their college days and began telling stories on each other.

All of theses activities, combined with a win in football, made for the perfect Homecoming experience. I can’t wait until next year!

Homecoming (Part 1)

Today marks the beginning of my very first Baylor Homecoming. Shocking I know. Especially since both of my parents are Baylor grads. Oh well. Such is life.

We kicked off the Homecoming celebration with Freshmen Mass Meeting. During this ceremony we paid tribute to the Immortal Ten, 10 Baylor students killed on their way to a basketball game in 1927. The ceremony began at 11 p.m. and was extremely moving. We, the Class of 2015, gathered in Waco Hall and as the story of the Immortal Ten was told, each member of this tragic group was represented by a Baylor Chamberman. Then, the eternal flame was lit from the candles of the symbolic Immortal Ten and the Class of 2015 torch bearer was chosen. Next, we each received our own candle which we held as we made the trek from Waco Hall to Fountain Mall. Once we arrived at Fountain Mall we built the bonfire that will illuminate Baylor campus tomorrow night.

As the last time our class will be all together in the same place until graduation, the tradition was extremely moving.

Refresh and Treat Night

Well we only have 6 weeks left until finals! How crazy is that?! This semester has definitely flown by!

On another note, I made the unfortunate mistake of choosing to do very little work last weekend. Now, I am regretting that decision as I am hectically composing outlines and completing homework. This week in general is just a teeny bit crazy because Treat Night (Baylor staff bring their children trick-or-treating at the girls decorated dorms) is tonight and Steppin’ Out is Saturday! Crazy stuff! Brooks theme for Treat Night is board games. So, my floor is Candyland. I am currently a resident of the ice cream sea. It is simultaneously beautiful, yummy and sticky where I live.

Last night Brooks held an event for Brooks residents called Refresh. It was a time of fellowship and stress-relieving activities designed to give us a break from our studies. I ended up painting ice cream for our ice cream sea for the majority of the time. I, unfortunately, am not artistically inclined. So, when I decided that I wanted to paint a cartoon bear under the words “Sic ‘em”, it became a monumental task. I think it took me about 20 minutes to get the right color brown for my bear; however, it did turn out rather cute. But, because it took me so long to paint the bear…I decided to use a yellow paint pen to write “Sic ‘em” (which I have not done yet).

In conclusion….Refresh was a great success. It completely relieved my stress.

Now for the Treat Night portion of things.

Another glorious Baylor tradition that I discovered this week is Treat Night. This is basically a night in which the Baylor faculty and staff bring their kids trick-or-treating to the girls residence halls. This tradition is a blast for us because we get to decorate our halls in a specific theme. Brooks theme this year was board games. So, for a few nights I lived in the Ice Cream Sea of Candyland. Here are a few pictures from our night!!

GUMBY!!!!!

All the lovely Brooks participants!!

I would upload more images but I’m rather tired. And so, I bid you goodnight!

Long Time, No See

Hey guys! I know it has been a really long time since I have blogged. Things have definitely gotten crazy around here. Last week I had all of my midterms (which was, of course, a teeny tiny bit stressful). I am pretty sure that they all went fairly successfully.

After completing my last exam on Thursday morning (HALLELUJAH!!!!), I jumped in my car and drove home to surprise my parents. They were under the impression that I wouldn’t be getting home until sometime in the early evening. I pulled up to the church (both of my parents are ministers) at about 1:30 in the afternoon and walked down the hallway with my finger to my lips so nobody would let the cat out of the bag. When I popped my head in my mom’s office she just stared at me for a second, screamed and finally jumped out of her chair (almost dropping her computer in the process), ran over and gave me a hug. Then I was off to surprise my dad. When I opened the door to his office, he reacted much less violently. All-in-all it was a pretty good weekend (Except for the loss to A&M. Unfortunately, it happens).

Unlike last week, this week has been uneventful academically. It seems to be the recovery week in all of my classes, which is definitely a plus. Another wonderful thing about this week thus far is the weather. It has been GORGEOUS! I am, however, slightly mad at myself. You see, I contemplated bringing some of my cold weather clothes back with me after this weekend. But, I thought, “It’s Texas. The weather won’t get too chilly for another couple of weeks”. Well, my bad! I have definitely needed sweaters for the last two days.

I will talk to you guys again in another couple of days. Until then, be safe!!

Libby

P.S. I met RGIII at breakfast the other day…NBD. (For those of you who don’t speak text…”No Big Deal”.) (Oh, and for those of you who don’t speak Libby…sarcasm.)

My week thus far…

So, this week has been pretty uneventful. Next week, however, is definitely going to be a doozy. I have three exams and a presentation. I’m pretty sure that all of my professors got together and plotted to make next week miserable. No…not really. But, since this is my first round of exams…I’m kind of freaking out!

Now that I’ve got that off my chest, let’s talk about what’s happening this weekend. Friday is the “B” for Brooks Fall Dance. If you haven’t guessed from the name, we’re supposed to go as something that starts with the letter “B”. I haven’t quite decided what I’m going as but whatever it is, it’ll be epic. Then on Saturday…FOOTBALL GAME!!! I really love football. Of course, spread throughout these other activities will be lots of studying.

Oh wait! I can’t believe I forgot about this! Gungor, one of the best Christian bands of all time (in my humble opinion), was at chapel on Monday!! How cool is that?! Gungor is currently touring with David Crowder so they took a break from the tour to play for us. Only the acoustic members of the band are touring so it wasn’t the entire group but it was still AMAZING!! The people that did play for us include Michael Gungor, his wife, and a cellist named Kevin. Fun Fact: Kevin is currently competing on the show The Sing Off with his acapella group The Pentatonix. I love this place. Only at Baylor.

Well, I hope everyone has a great last couple week days and a superb weekend!!

Oldies but Goodies

So…this blog is going to be a walk down memory lane. And of course by that I mean that I’m going to show you a bunch of pictures of my parents’ college years. Enjoy.

This is my mom and one of her best friends Todd Still. Dr. Still now teaches at Truett Theological Seminary.

My mom and her roommates.

My mom at a TriDelt dance with Kevin. (This is my mom’s caption. She says “Kevin” with such confidence as if he’s the only “Kevin” in the world and I should know exactly who she’s talking about.)

My mom and her big and little sisses.

SING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Baylor in London. The guy on the right is Dr. Scott Moore. He now teaches at Baylor.

My mom’s first Baylor game her freshman year. They beat BYU.

One of my mom’s closest friends from home, Joyce, was a TCU cheerleader. My best friend goes to TCU…hmmmmmmm….

And finally….the one you’ve all been waiting for…the only picture of my dad.

My dad is on the far right. He tells me that this was taken on Diadeloso during a water break.

I hope you guys enjoyed my little slideshow of my parents.

Football!!!!

So, I have recently become obsessed with football. Don’t get me wrong, before I came to Baylor I loved going to games and watching it on TV. But now….goodness gracious! I’m a crazy person. I am constantly on ESPN.com checking stats and rankings.

Because of this new passion, I have really enjoyed going to the last few games. My favorite so far was definitely the TCU game. It was a great start to my years at Baylor! I enjoyed that game so much because my best friend goes to TCU. Let me tell you, as soon as we found out that we were opening against each other she began telling me that Baylor was going to lose. Needless to say, I felt completely vindicated when we won.

Since my parents both graduated from BU I’ve been coming to games for my entire life but that game was by far the most exciting one I’ve experienced.

(My brother Luke and me as kiddies at a Baylor game.)

My high school didn’t have a football team (we were tiny…my graduating class had 18 people in it) so this is a completely new journey for me. I am loving it. My first encounter with our football team happened one morning as I was heading to my first class. I rounded the corner of the Brooks entrance and beheld a pack of gigantic men making its way towards me. I’m not sure but I think I may have stopped and stared with my mouth hanging wide open. Breakfast at Brooks….it’s definitely eventful.

It is really interesting listening to everyone talk about RG3 (I don’t know why the 3 is lower than the letters…..hmmmmmm). Everyone, and I do mean everyone, is completely enamored with him. Even my mom talks about him constantly. I guess I can’t really blame them; The man is a pretty fantastic athlete. In fact, while running in The Line (which is one of the coolest experiences of my life) at the Rice game I high-fived him!! I know, very exciting.

. While high-fiving him I accidentally took this picture. Yes, I know, quite amazing. Anyway, I just thought that was pretty cool. I am super pumped to see how we do the rest of the season!

Have a great week!!

Libby
