Baylor’s new buildings, 1960s edition
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Photo Galleries, Just for Fun
Students at Baylor have benefited from a rush of new campus buildings over the past decade or so, but did you realize there was a similar “building boom” in the 1950s and 1960s? Click here for a photo gallery of artists’ renderings of some familiar campus landmarks, followed by pictures of what those buildings look like today. Try to guess the building based on the rendering; if you get stumped, click “Captions” at the bottom right of the page and the building’s name will appear on the slide.
Look for more on the opportunities Baylor’s recent “growing season” has given students in the new issue of Baylor Magazine, arriving in homes this week.

Race for the White House at Poage
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Photo Galleries, Research
In our modern era, presidential candidates have (for the most part) moved away from creative and colorful posters and buttons in favor of MySpace pages and Facebook groups. In some ways, that’s a shame, because future generations won’t have artifacts like “Who? Who? Hoover!” signs and “Snowmobilers for Bush” bumper stickers to look back on.
Just in time for the run-up to our next presidential election, the Baylor Collection of Political Materials has put an array of such memorabilia from its archives on display at the Poage Legislative Library (on campus, between Jones Library and Castellaw Communications). The “Race for the White House” exhibit is on view from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, from now through the end of summer. Admission is free.
The Waco Tribune-Herald and Baylor Lariat each recently ran nice features on the unique collection. In case you can’t make it to Waco to see the display, we’ve compiled a photo gallery of the exhibition for you.

Students ring in Chinese New Year
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Photo Galleries, Student life
Last Thursday, East met West in the heart of Baylor’s campus as the Asian Student Association and Campus Programs hosted a Chinese New Year celebration in Burleson Quadrangle.
A family craft tent, free food and traditional games welcomed visitors. A martial arts group from Dallas demonstrated kung fu and tai chi, while other groups performed traditional Chinese New Year traditions like the lion dance and the dragon dance. Click here for a photo gallery from the event.
It’s good to see Baylor students getting a taste of other cultures, and it somehow seems particularly fitting for it all to happen in the oldest part of campus.

Students brave the elements to show their support
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Photo Galleries, Student life, AthleticsLast week on ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption,” host Michael Wilbon commented that “They don’t care this much about basketball, for the most part, at Baylor,” holding his thumb and index finger a half-inch apart.
I think the hundreds of students who stood in line Friday outside the Ferrell Center through rain and temperatures in the 30s would beg to differ. (Click here for photos.) So would the couple hundred more who were lined up at 8 a.m. Saturday for tickets to the men’s game that afternoon — even though the ticket office wouldn’t open for another five hours.
Couple that show of interest with the fans who showed up at 2 a.m. Wednesday night to welcome back the team from College Station, the 20% of the student body that was at Saturday’s men’s game, and the fact that the Bear Pit has quickly become the largest student organization on campus, and I think it’s safe to say that Baylor’s students care about basketball. (The Bear Pit’s looking good on SI.com, by the way.)
The No. 6 Lady Bears are home tonight at 7 p.m. against No. 25 Texas; let’s keep the support coming!

Your Baylor Christmas ornaments!

Share your Baylor Christmas ornaments!
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Photo Galleries, Just for Fun
While some people prefer their Christmas trees to be classically beautiful, with matching ornaments, ribbons, etc., my family has always preferred the sentimental route, with ornaments going back to when my sister and I were kids. It’s fun hanging the ornaments and remembering when and why we got them — the baby in a nutshell from my first Christmas, the Sesame Street ornaments from kindergarten, etc.
When I started college, my family added a Baylor ornament to the tree, and when I graduated, added another one (that’s it at right). Does your tree include a treasured Baylor ornament? If so, send us a photo at BaylorProudChristmas@gmail.com! We’ll post the best ones here on Baylor Proud. (ETA: Our photo gallery is now up!)

Bruiser joins St. Nick for Santa’s Workshop
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Photo Galleries, Just for Fun, Student life
Baylor students, faculty and staff pitched in last week to give hundreds of underprivileged local children a little something extra this Christmas.
Approximately 800 kids converged on Baylor’s McLane Student Life Center for Santa’s Workshop, where Mr. and Mrs. Claus waited to gave out presents donated by the Baylor family. Volunteers shared lunch and played with the kids, ages 3-5. Bruiser, the Baylor mascot, and Clifford the Big Red Dog also joined in the festivities.

Christmas on 5th Street
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Photo Galleries, Student life
It’s December, which means Christmas is quickly approaching. Here at Baylor, as always, the Christmas season kicked off last Thursday night with Christmas on 5th Street, including KOT’s 42nd annual Christmas Tree Lighting. Concerts by Chris Rice and Clay Walker followed, with proceeds benefitting multiple sclerosis research.

Engaging China
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Photo Galleries, Academics, Student life
In July, a group of 17 Baylor students left Texas for China, where they joined with their peers overseas to produce real-world business solutions — in just six weeks.
During that time, the students worked for some of the international companies that partner with the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, the students’ hosts during their time in China.
The program is one of Baylor’s increasing number of options for studying abroad. Read more in the new issue of Baylor Magazine, which hits homes this week, or online at baylormag.com. The website also includes a slideshow of some 70 photos from the trip, taken by Baylor photographer Robbie Rogers.
