Top-ranked women’s hoops’ signing class features nation’s top HS player

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Athletics, Honors , trackback

Brittney GrinerYesterday was National Signing Day for a number of NCAA sports, and Baylor’s baseball, men’s basketball, men’s golf, softball and volleyball teams all announced commitments from a number of highly regarded student-athletes who will enroll at Baylor next fall.

Each of those programs did well, hauling in nationally rated prospects from across the country, but this year, it was head coach Kim Mulkey’s women’s basketball team who led the way. The Lady Bears’ class is being recognized as the nation’s best by such outlets as ESPN HoopGurlz and USA Today, with five players all ranked among the top 60 nationally.

Included in that group is Brittney Griner (pictured), a 6-8 post from Houston who is easily the consensus No. 1 high school player in the country. Last fall, videos of her dunking — yes, dunking — became a sensation on YouTube; a search for “girl dunking” brings up multiple videos of Griner, including this one with over 2.5 million views and a later Houston news report with almost 500,000 views.

Sic ’em, women’s basketball, and sic ’em, all you soon-to-be Baylor student-athletes!
