Baylor women’s tennis among nation’s elite programs

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Athletics, Honors

Joey ScrivanoA couple of months ago, we noted that Baylor had seven teams ranked in the top 25. That’s still true, but a new program has taken over the lead as Baylor’s highest-ranked program.

Head coach Joey Scrivano has his women’s tennis squad ranked No. 4 in the country. In fact, the team has reached as high as No. 2 this season, thanks to a 20-2 overall record and a perfect 6-0 start in Big 12 Conference play. Four of Baylor’s six singles players and two of the squad’s three doubles teams are nationally ranked.

The Lady Bears’ only two losses this season have come against teams that were at the time ranked No. 1 in the country — a 4-2 loss to Stanford in February and a 5-2 loss to Northwestern in March.

With five regular season matches left to play, the women are well on their way towards their fifth Big 12 title in six years — not to mention their 10th NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 13 seasons.

Bearathon participants race to raise scholarship funds

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Photo Galleries, Student life

Bearathon 2008Over 500 runners participated Saturday in Student Foundation’s fifth annual Bearathon, and the record turnout likely will mean a record fundraising total for student scholarships once the contributions are tallied.

The event shows what is possible when students, alumni and Waco residents come together. Bearathon is organized by students, and last year raised $15,000 for scholarships. About half the participants were students, with alumni, Waco residents and even some out-of-towners also joining in.

The 13.1-mile course began at Fountain Mall on campus, continued through Cameron Park and downtown Waco, and finished up back on campus. Student groups gathered at spots along the route to pass out water and cheer on the competitors. Click here for a photo gallery from the event.

Four Baylor-related books among Christianity Today’s favorites

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Academics, Research, Honors

Christianity Today awardwinning booksAs the world’s largest Baptist university, it stands to reason that Baylor would be among the leaders in the study of religion. Recognition from outside the University — like the recent honors from Christianity Today — just confirms the standing of Baylor and its faculty nationwide.

Christianity Today, the nation’s leading evangelical Christian magazine, named books by three Baylor professors and one alum among the winners of its 2008 Book Awards:

* Questions to All of Your Answers: A Journey from Folk Religion to Examined Faith, by Truett Seminary professor Dr. Roger Olson;

* The Great Awakening: The Roots of Evangelical Christianity in Colonial America, by history professor Dr. Thomas Kidd;

* Discovering God: The Origins of the Great Religions and the Evolution of Belief, by Dr. Rodney Stark, co-director of the Institute for Studies of Religion; and

* Faith in the Halls of Power: How Evangelicals Joined the American Elite, by Dr. D. Michael Lindsay, class of 1994.
