“Jingle bears, jingle bears, jingle all the way…”

A Baylor/Chipmunk Christmas video
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Just for FunWhen we first started this blog and were out roaming the Internet for content, I found this video and bookmarked it to save until Christmas. That time is now, so without further ado, I present: the Baylor Girl Chipmunk Christmas video.

Sepulveda stands out for Steelers
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Athletics, Honors
A lot of people questioned the Pittsburgh Steelers traded up to draft Baylor’s Daniel Sepulveda in the fourth round this year. After all, it’s not often that a punter even gets drafted at all.
Sepulveda has made the Steelers’ move pay off this year, and he was rewarded by being named the team’s rookie of the year today. In his first year as a pro, Sepulveda leads the NFL with 43.5 percent of his punts landing inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. He also ranks fifth among full-time AFC punters in net yards. Pretty good for a rookie!
(Bonus link: Remember when Sepulveda “de-cleated” North Texas’ return man? You can move the man from linebacker, but you can’t take the linebacker out of the man.)
Sic ’em, Daniel!
Christmas gift idea: Baylor books
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Academics, Alumni, Athletics
With one week left ’til Christmas, many shoppers find that both ideas and time are in short supply. If that describes your situation, may we suggest a Baylor-related book for your loved one?
Both Baylor Magazine and the Baylor Line regularly feature round-ups of books by Baylor alums and faculty (see here and here for examples). We’ve also mentioned a few Baylor-related books in previous blog posts (here and here). But we’ve got a few more suggestions for you:
Head women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey’s autobiography, Won’t Back Down, came out this summer (and recently was mentioned in this round-up of sports books from USA Today).
Also, Todd Copeland’s The Immortal 10 was released this year, nicely timed for this summer’s unveiling of the Immortal 10 Memorial.
And while an update is reportedly in the works, the classic To Light the Ways of Time: an illustrated history of Baylor University, 1845-1986, is a must-read for anyone interested in the University’s past.

Welcome, new alumni!

Nearly 800 Baylor students walked across the stage at the Ferrell Center Saturday, receiving their diplomas at the annual winter commencement ceremony. These now-former students join the ranks of the more than 135,000 graduates Baylor has produced over the years.

Baylor helps bring clean water to Mongolian town
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Research
The Baptist Standard picked up on a story recently about work that Baylor researchers are doing to bring clean water to a town in Mongolia.
Dr. Rene Massengale, an assistant professor of biology, is leading the project. Industrial mining in the area has led to environmental contamination, which in turn has led to water laced with toxic levels of cyanide, mercury and other heavy metals. Testing confirmed the contamination in the recently completed phase one of the project; a pair of groups, Lifeqwest Mongolia and Texas Baptist Men, have brought in medical supplies and water purifying equipment to provide a short-term solution.
Phase two will set up a permanent Baylor in Mongolia program and establish a permanent water-quality lab, where students from Baylor and the University of Mongolia can further research the needs of local towns and work to train residents about water quality, health and sanitation.

Baylor profs receive NSF grant for ELG
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Academics, Research, HonorsCongratulations to Drs. Ian Gravagne and Kenneth Van Treuren on receiving a $145,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to support their Engaged Learning Group (ELG)!
You might remember reading about their group, titled “Energy and Society: the costs and benefits of an energy-dependant civilization,” in the summer ’07 issue of Baylor Magazine. In short, ELGs provide a unique opportunity for freshmen to meet with their fellow residents for weekly, interdisciplinary lectures and discussions about a particular issue. Gravagne and Van Treuren’s ELG is one of three that began this fall. It’s a unique way to dive into a topic with professors from across campus.

Dickie V applauds Baylor men’s basketball
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Athletics
ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale had some nice things to say about Baylor’s men’s basketball program in a recent column on ESPN.com:
“Down at Baylor, Scott Drew is putting together something special. He has done a great job despite adversity and the Bears have played outstanding basketball early. Baylor won the Paradise Jam event in the Virgin Islands, knocking off Notre Dame along the way. The Bears took a very strong Washington State team to the wire. Baylor has an exceptional backcourt in Curtis Jerrells and Aaron Bruce.”
Dallas-area fans — the Bears are coming to you in just a couple of weeks! Baylor will face Arkansas, a preseason top 25 team, on January 5 at the American Airlines Center. Get your tickets now through Ticketmaster and root on the Bears! (Bear Foundation members, season ticket holders and students should contact the Baylor ticket office in advance of the game.) For other home game tickets, click on the “Get Athletic Tickets” link in the right column.
