Baylor introduces Briles as new football coach

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Athletics

Art BrilesBaylor President John Lilley and Director of Athletics Ian McCaw today welcomed Art Briles to Baylor as the Bears’ new head football coach.

Briles spent the last five seasons as head coach at the University of Houston, leading the Cougars to four bowl games. In 2001, UH went 0-11; two years later, Briles had them bowling, and in five years, his Cougars had won the Conference USA championship. According to the UH website, only five other D-IA teams had made such a leap in the last 30 years. Only one coach has ever led Houston to more bowl games than Briles, the 2006 Conference USA Coach of the Year.

A year ago, Briles was named the Sportexe NCAA Division I-A Football Coach of the Year. After finishing sixth nationally in 2006 in yards per game, Briles’ Cougars have improved to No. 4 in the country this year, averaging 528.9 yards per game.

BaylorTV.com will offer archived video of the press conference.

Engaging China

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Photo Galleries, Academics, Student life

Baylor Magazine Fall 2007In July, a group of 17 Baylor students left Texas for China, where they joined with their peers overseas to produce real-world business solutions — in just six weeks.

During that time, the students worked for some of the international companies that partner with the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, the students’ hosts during their time in China.

The program is one of Baylor’s increasing number of options for studying abroad. Read more in the new issue of Baylor Magazine, which hits homes this week, or online at baylormag.com. The website also includes a slideshow of some 70 photos from the trip, taken by Baylor photographer Robbie Rogers.

Baylor equestrian helps make a cancer patient’s dream reality

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Photo Galleries, Athletics

Taylor Darling and Fudge7-year-old Taylor Darling has been fighting cancer for nearly two years; thankfully, it is now in remission. As she travels the road back to good health, she’ll have a new companion: a 6-year-old black quarter pony horse she named “Fudge.”

The pony was a gift from the Make-A-Wish Foundation and was presented during an intermission at a recent Baylor equestrian meet, when Darling was also made an honorary equestrian team member. Coming in, she knew she had been selected as an “honorary carrot-feeder” for the day, but she had no idea that the pony she was feeding was her own.

Read more in these articles from BaylorBears.com and the Waco Tribune-Herald, and click here or on the picture at right for a slideshow of photos from the day.

Sic ’em, Baylor equestrian and Make-A-Wish, for helping a girl’s dream come true; and an extra-big sic ’em to Taylor!

#13 Lady Bears top #12 Golden Bears

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Athletics

Jessica Morrow Nice win for the Lady Bears yesterday afternoon on national TV, as 13th-ranked Baylor came from behind to beat No. 12 Cal 69-56 at the Ferrell Center.

How about this unbelievable stat: under head coach Kim Mulkey, the Lady Bears are 53-1 in home nonconference games. Overall, Baylor is 103-13 in the Ferrell Center in Mulkey’s eight seasons.

The Lady Bears improved to 5-0 on the season, equaling the Baylor men’s team’s perfect start this year. Monday, coach Scott Drew’s team received votes in the polls for the third time in four weeks. The Lady Bears will likely move up a spot or two in the rankings when they are released Tuesday.

The Baylor men and women each have five more home games before starting conference play in mid-January. Get your tickets now!

Interior design: small program, big results

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Academics, Student life, Honors

Baylor’s interior design program is one of the school’s smaller programs; in 2006-07, only one of the 2,400 bachelor’s degrees awarded by the University was in interior design. But that’s not stopping the program from bringing in accolades for Baylor.

Last month, students claimed first and second place awards at the Texas Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers’ Student Design Competition. A recent graduate also is making a splash with her focus on environmentally friendly design.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Just for Fun

Thanksgiving 2007I’m thankful for a lot of things, but high on the list is the opportunity to have both attended Baylor and now to work for the University. I’m thankful to those who give money to allow students who couldn’t otherwise afford college to attend Baylor. I’m thankful for teachers who work hard every day to help their students. I’m thankful for administrators who truly care about the University. I’m thankful for students who love being here, and for alumni who love that they can call themselves Baylor graduates.

Men’s hoops wins Paradise Jam title

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Athletics, Honors

Curtis Jerrells 2007-08Head coach Scott Drew’s Baylor men’s basketball team purposely put together a tougher non-conference schedule this year to prepare the team for Big 12 play, and the squad is proving up to the challenge.

Over the past three days, the men defeated Wichita State, Notre Dame and Winthrop to win the Paradise Jam championship. Notre Dame and Winthrop were each NCAA Tournament teams last year, and Wichita State has made the postseason four times in the past five years.

Tournament MVP (and Big 12 Player of the Week) Curtis Jerrells averaged 17.7 points and 7 rebounds over the three games and hit several big shots late in games. Senior Aaron Bruce was also named to the all-tournament team.

The Bears are now 4-0 on the season and are again receiving votes in the latest AP Top 25 poll.

Pyfer bear sculpture goes up by SLC

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Photo Galleries

Pyfer bear sculptureAfter years in the making, the Pyfer bear sculpture was installed last week in front of the McLane Student Life Center. The 9-foot-tall, 1,200-pound sculpture was created by a Baylor professor, Dr. Douglas Crow, and was funded through a gift from Carol (Trice) Pyfer and her husband, John F. Pyfer, in honor of Carol’s parents and her uncle, Bill Boyd, who was the first official trainer of Baylor’s bear mascot.

Why Baylor law stands out

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Academics

Baylor law studentI know we’ve written a lot about Baylor Law School recently, what with its students leading the state in bar exam pass rate and earning nods from The Princeton Review. But Texas Lawyer ran such a good article on Baylor law that I felt I had to mention it. The article examines why Baylor’s bar exam pass rate is so high year after year. Three quotes jumped out at me:

“Part of the genius of what Baylor is doing is requiring the students’ work ethic to be at an all-time high in their third year. There is no let up, no coasting — that momentum takes them into the bar review period, and it pays off.” – South Texas College of Law Dean James Alfini

“I have argued cases in front of the U.S. Supreme Court and the 5th Circuit, but I have never been as frightened as I was in Practice Court. After that, the bar exam was really pretty easy.” — former Texas governor and Baylor law grad Mark White

“The ethos at Baylor is that the professors are teachers first and scholars second. Their focus is on the teaching. The school is clear about its mission: that it is very student-centric.” — former University of Houston law dean Nancy Rapoport

But really, if you’re interested in Baylor law, read the whole article. Oh, and if you’re in the Houston area and interested in the life of Baylor law alum Leon Jaworski, check out a documentary of his life, Uncommon Law, airing this Wednesday at 8 p.m. on KUHT Channel 8.
