Baylor student wins Wheel of Fortune

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Just for Fun, Student life

Baylor on Wheel of FortuneIt’s an epidemic — first Jeopardy, then Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, and now Wheel of Fortune!

Baylor sophomore Nick Herring won almost $30,000 this week on Wheel, despite missing the final puzzle. Not a bad haul for a half-hour’s work, eh?

For more on Herring’s experience, you can read this Lariat article or watch this short report from Waco’s NBC 6 News.

Entrepreneurial honors

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Academics, Honors

Baylor’s Entrepreneurship Program in the Hankamer School of Business has been a leader in the field since 1977, when Baylor became one of the first three colleges in the country to offer an entrepreneurship major.

Last month, Fortune Small Business recognized Baylor’s experience and expertise in its first-ever ranking of “America’s Best Colleges for Entrepreneurs.” This month, it’s Entrepreneur magazine and The Princeton Review teaming up to name their top 50 entrepreneurial colleges; Baylor placed 23rd in the ranking.

Baylor undertakes mammoth effort at local site

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Academics, Research

Mammoth site replica at Mayborn MuseumUSA Today ran a nice article today on the Waco Mammoth Site and Baylor’s involvement in both the excavation of the site and its preparation for possible inclusion as part of the National Park System.

In short, the site — located just outside Waco — is “the largest known concentration of prehistoric mammoths perishing from a single event.” Researchers have uncovered 24 mammoths, a prehistoric camel and a large cat at the site since its discovery in 1978.

Local and national officials predict that the site could become a hot tourist stop if or when it becomes part of the National Park System, due to its proximity to Waco and I-35. In the meantime, Baylor’s Mayborn Museum will continue to serve as the primary caretaker for both the remains and the site. While the site is not open to visitors now, mammoth enthusiasts can tour a replica of the site at the Mayborn Museum (pictured at right).

Bear leads Bucs to win with last-minute FG

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Alumni, Athletics

Matt Bryant footballIn case you missed it Sunday, former Baylor kicker Matt Bryant’s game-winning 43-yard field goal with 11 seconds left led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 13-10 win over the Tennessee Titans. (Click here for video.)

Bryant, one of seven Bears active in the NFL, spent two years at Baylor (1997-98). His 21 career field goals rank seventh in the Baylor recordbooks, and his .724 career field-goal percentage is third-best in school history.

Through six games, Bryant ranks fourth in the NFC in field-goal percentage, having hit eight of nine on the year. (His only miss came on a 54-yard attempt in week three.) The St. Petersburg Times ran a nice feature on him this week, too.

The real Baylor bears

Baylor bears on KCEN mascotsIf you haven’t visited the Bill and Eva Williams Bear Habitat since the old Bear Pit was renovated, you’re missing out. Joy and Lady have a nice new home now, and Lady has even been making appearances again at Baylor football games!

Waco’s KCEN-TV (Channel 6) did a nice video feature on the pair and Baylor’s mascot program recently as part of its “Central Texas Treasures” series. Click here for the video.

Success starts here

successcenter.jpg

Last week I took a tour of the new Paul L. Foster Success Center following its dedication. If I hadn’t known I was walking into the old Sid Richardson building, I would never have believed that this was the same place where I fought my way through so many math and science classes just a few years ago.

The basement (which previously housed the Strecker Museum) and first floor have been completely renovated, creating space to bring together various academic agencies that previously were scattered across campus. Now under one roof are Academic Advisement, Academic Support, the Office of Access and Learning Accomodation, Career Counseling, and Career Services.

Success Center administrators say that response to the new center has been overwhelming. Moving all of these services into one place in the heart of campus has resulted in an exponential increase in student drop-ins, faculty referrals, testing services and tutoring assignments. Now if students come in with a question, they need only to be directed across the hall instead of across campus to get the help they need.

Creating the Success Center was one of the key parts of Baylor 2012’s first imperative: “Establish an environment where learning can flourish.” If early returns are any indication, we’re well on our way.

Proud of my Baylor education

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Alumni

Baylor diploma frameAfter living in Waco for a couple of years after I graduated, I moved to Philadelphia, where I worked for four years before moving back to Texas. You’d better believe I had my office decked out in green and gold; if my coworkers up north didn’t know much about Baylor before I worked there, they sure did by the time I left!

My Baylor degree is one of the things in life I’m most proud of, for all that it represents. The recent alumni survey conducted on behalf of the University found that the vast majority of grads feel the same way.

Above and beyond the 80% who are “very proud” of their alma mater, 87% said a Baylor education is “better than most” or “among the best” compared to all other colleges and universities. Three-quarters of alumni agreed that Baylor is “moving forward,” and when asked if the quality of education at Baylor is changing, the most popular response by far was that it is getting better.

That’s good news, whether you’re a past, current or future student.

Freshman Follies Photos

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Photo Galleries, Just for Fun, Student life

Freshman follies 2007One of my biggest regrets looking back on college was that I didn’t participate in more activities on campus, especially as a freshman. It took me awhile to break out of my shell, and so I missed out on a lot of fun — things like Freshman Follies, for instance.

The longstanding tradition continued earlier this week, as first-year students gathered at Bear Park (formerly the South Russell parking lot) to revel in all the shaving cream, ketchup and nacho cheese that they could take. Click here or on the image at right for a slideshow of pictures from Freshman Follies 2007.
