Grant allows BU student to study fishy problem
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Academics, ResearchFrom Lake Waco to the Brazos River to the creek running through the heart of campus, Baylor sometimes seems surrounded by water. (And that’s not including when a thunderstorm threatens to flood 5th Street…)
Baylor grad student Laura Dobbins recently received funding from the EPA to study the life found in bodies of water like these–specifically, at how aquatic life is effected by certain chemicals found in many personal care products, pharmaceuticals and foods. Her method’s unique approach may allow future scientists to predict the effects of other contaminants on the environment.

Baylor-Texas A&M Football on TV
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Athletics
The last three Battles of the Brazos have been decided by a total of 14 points, including a pair of overtime games. This Saturday’s game promises more of the same, as Baylor and Texas A&M each come in with a 3-1 record.
The folks at Versus (formerly the Outdoor Life Network) recognized the game’s potential and have picked it up for national broadcast, starting at 11:30 a.m. CT. So if you can’t make it to College Station, check your cable lineups now and make sure you can see the game!
Sic ’em Saturday, Bears!
Baylor = Good Value
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : AcademicsBaylor has long been known as a good value, and it appears that students continue to recognize that.
- 91% of this year’s freshman class considered Baylor’s educational value “very important” in their decision to attend Baylor — far and away the #1 answer.
- A survey of Texas high school juniors considering applying to Baylor said the #1 reason was because “Baylor is a great school.”
- By a margin of 7-1, collegebound juniors across Texas agreed that “a Baylor education is good value for the money.”
These are exciting numbers coming from the University’s future graduates. Sic ’em, new Baylor Bears!
Angela Kinsey on Letterman!
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Just for Fun, Alumni
Set your TiVos (or VCRs, if you’re behind on your technology like me) for October 5, when Baylor alum Angela Kinsey is scheduled to appear on The Late Show with David Letterman!
Presumably Angela will be promoting the new season of The Office, but if we’re lucky, the current cover girl for Baylor Magazine will work in a plug for her alma mater as well.
This won’t be her first time on Letterman, either; watch video of her appearance this spring here.

Defense keys Baylor football win
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Athletics, Honors
Baylor’s improved running game got most of the attention Saturday after the Bears’ 34-21 win at Buffalo, but in my book, the player of the game had to be sophomore safety Jordan Lake.
Lake pulled down two interceptions and forced two fumbles Saturday, setting up the Bears’ first 10 points plus a third-quarter field goal. No Bear had forced four turnovers in a game since at least 1992, when the NCAA began recognizing fumbles forced as an official statistic. Those numbers make Lake an excellent candidate for the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week.

Raising riches for research
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Academics, ResearchIn a recent speech to Baylor faculty and staff, provost Randall O’Brien shared this tidbit that I haven’t seen anywhere else with those gathered:
“In the area of research, since 2002 research expenditures have increased over 45%, with external, non-Baylor monies in support of Baylor research exceeding $13 million.”

Baylor’s Jones recognized by Sports Illustrated
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Athletics, Honors
As a kid dreaming of being a famous athlete someday, I wondered what it would be like to have my picture in Sports Illustrated. Baylor sophomore Nichole Jones is learning what that’s like after being included in SI’s “Faces in the Crowd” this week, a top honor for amateur athletes across the country.
The Sept. 24 issue, now on newsstands, applauds Jones for winning her first two races this year, leading the Bears to a pair of team victories to open the season. For more on Jones and her success at Baylor, here’s an article in Baylor Magazine.

New computer cluster to aid Baylor research
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Academics, ResearchBy next spring, Baylor should have in place a new high-performance computer system that will aid University researchers in their own work and in collaborations with other universities.
Put simply, the new system from Hewlett Packard is 35 times faster than what is currently in place, and about 1,000 times faster than your average personal computer. Work that would previously have taken five days will soon take only one — an advantage that should not only help current Baylor researchers, but also may help the University attract new professors.

Baylor and the Federal Reserve
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Alumni
I’ve never quite understood what it is that the Federal Reserve does — perhaps because the only economics class I ever took was a blow-off course in high school. Then last night, I was flipping channels and came across former Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan on The Daily Show, and he gave a pretty good explanation of how it all works.
Why do I mention this? Well, as it turns out, there’s a Baylor connection at the Federal Reserve — Michelle A. Smith, who serves as the Assistant to the Board and Director of the Office of Board Members. Smith, who graduated with her BA in journalism in 1990 and masters degrees in science and international journalism a year later, oversees the congressional, media and public information activities of the Board.
Good to know that, even if I don’t get it, there are Baylor people out there working (through the media) to help us understand what’s going on!
Sic ’em, Michelle!
