Striding toward history
Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in : Athletics
Former Baylor sprinter and two-time Olympic gold medalist set a personal mark of 43.45 in the 400 meters en route to another gold medal at the 2007 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan.
Wariner, who is also a volunteer coach for Baylor Track, posted the fifth fastest quarter in history. Only two humans have ever run faster, and one of them is former Bear Michael Johnson, who holds the world record of 43.18.
Collectively, Baylor runners have run 15 out of the 18 fastest quarter mile races in history! Jeremy has three of those, and Michael has 12. Watch out Michael: Jeremy is just hitting his stride!
Sic ’em, Jeremy, and sic ’em to Coach Harbour, Coach Hart and others from the Baylor family who help mold Baylor’s incredible athletes. Thanks for your years of hard work in making Baylor world renowned as Quarter Mile U!

If you let me play sports…

In 1995, Nike ran an ad where girls explained what would happen if they played sports. “I will have more self-confidence ,” “I’ll be 50 percent less likely to get breast cancer,” “I will suffer less depression,” etc.
A year later, Baylor joined the Big 12, and since then, BU has been at the forefront of universities providing new chances for female athletes. In fact, according to a chart in a recent issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education, Baylor has been among the top five Division-I schools in the country at increasing the number of varsity female athletes since 1995-96 (when the Chronicle started tracking such numbers).
Here’s the chart:
| Institution | Female athletes (1995-96) | Female athletes (2005-6) | Percentage increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northern Arizona | 32 | 249 | 678% |
| TCU | 40 | 184 | 360% |
| Mississippi Valley State | 29 | 121 | 317% |
| Notre Dame | 94 | 367 | 290% |
| Baylor | 72 | 238 | 231% |

Top 50 fame for BU student

Whether you’re one of the top quarterbacks or one of the top basketweavers, being in the top 50 in the U.S. in anything is a pretty impressive achievement. But to be named one of the top 50 undergrads in the nation? THAT’S something to write home about.
Junior Shane Slowey, a University Scholar from Bryan, was recently picked by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI) as one of its 50 Honors Fellows for 2007. Each year, the program picks “the nation’s most talented undergraduates to participate in a yearlong program of educational enrichment.” As such, Slowey is receiving special mentoring and career guidance from the ISI. He attended a weeklong conference this summer and will participate in future seminars and discussions throughout the year.

Students on a mission

What did you do with your summer?
Baylor students working with University Ministries traveled to Armenia, Honduras, Kenya and Mexico, where they built homes, led children’s Bible clubs, hosted a camp for deaf and hearing-impaired children, gave immunizations, constructed a micro-hydro-generator, set up free health clinics, installed a water purification system, and ministered to HIV/AIDS patients.

New Baylor Mag!

Nice story on Baylor alum Angela Kinsey — better known as Angela Martin on The Office — in the new issue of Baylor Magazine, hitting homes this week. Kinsey, a 1994 grad, talks about her time at Baylor and her success in Hollywood.
“I was in traffic the other day, and someone had ‘Sic ‘Em Bears’ on their bumper, and I pulled up next to them and just waved,” says Kinsey… “They probably thought I was a crazy person. But I do get real excited to meet people who have gone to Baylor.”
In case you didn’t get your copy of the magazine, you can also read the article (and the rest of the magazine) online at www.baylormag.com.

The start of classes means the start of Baylor’s fall sports’ seasons isn’t far behind. Volleyball sets things in motion Friday at a tournament in Buffalo, N.Y., and soccer starts Saturday with an exhibition game on the road against Houston. Baylor football’s 2007 slate kicks off Sept. 1 at TCU before returning to Waco for the home opener a week later against Rice.
The folks over in the Athletic Department have created some nice desktop wallpapers for your home computer so you can keep your favorite team’s schedule handy; download one for free at BaylorBears.com!

Edit to add: A couple of nice articles ran this week on Baylor football alums Daniel Sepulveda (Pittsburgh Steelers, Associated Press) and Trent Shelton (Indianapolis Colts, colts.com). Sic ‘em in the NFL!
Best in Business

The honors just keep rolling in this week! Fortune Small Business magazine named Baylor’s Hankamer School of Business one of the 25 best schools in the nation for entrepreneurship in its upcoming issue. The magazine also named Baylor one of the top six schools for “family business.”

As part of Welcome Week, new Baylor students spent Saturday helping improve the Waco community. Many students worked to help clean up Downtown Waco, while others framed a house on campus for Habitat for Humanity. Click here or on the image for a slideshow of their efforts.
Looks like these new students are already quickly learning the importance of being good stewards of the talents they have been given.

Members of Baylor’s Class of 2011 began their college careers today. The class brings in a school-record average SAT score (1218), and 40% of the freshmen graduated in their high school’s top 10%.
Those sorts of accolades helped Baylor rise six spots in the annual U.S. News & World Report rankings to 75th, its highest overall ranking ever. BU finished third in the Big 12 and fifth in the state of Texas in this year’s rankings.
